As we approach March, I am still sticking to my New Years resolution and trying to find ways to reduce our family’s environmental footprint.
At first glance, there are several steps to take along this road but when you already use transit & rarely drive, have reduced your electricity consumption as far as you can and buy very little in the way of consumer goods you have to become more creative in the changes you make.
One of the things I have recently changed are the ways in which we clean or have things cleaned. It’s all very well washing your clothes in cold water to save energy and only buying items you can take care of at home but what do you do when you still have dry clean only items to take care of? Even before we started down this path I hated the smell of the dry cleaners and worried about the chemicals that our clothes would absorb.
In our home, some items just have to be dry cleaned and pressed properly. While we work hard to ensure that our children learn how to take care of their own clothes (One of our sons actually irons more than I do!) Sometimes, such as when a uniform has to be perfect for Commanding Officers Parade, it’s better to have the reassurance of a professional finish.
That’s why I was happy to discover a Kitsilano dry cleaners that uses specialised detergents and conditioners that contain no dangerous solvents (The most often used solvent in the dry cleaning process is perchloroethylene (PERC), a hazardous chemical that can cause neurological, kidney and liver damage after short-term exposure, and more serious afflictions with long-term exposure).
West Boulevard Cleaners (with branches in both Kitsilano and Kerrisdale) use only water and biodegradable cleaners in their cleaning processes. Because of this, your clothes never come back with that slight chemical smell you get from most dry cleaners – a huge bonus for those of us with family members who have sensory issues or allergies to fragrances.
Of course, the biggest bonus is the reduction in environmental impact. By using products with a less negative environmental impact, West Boulevard Cleaners are reducing the amount of toxic waste being generated and reducing the risk of accidental air, water or soil contamination. For those occasions where you have to have a garment or household item specially cleaned this is exactly what is needed. I want to know that when I cannot clean
For those occasions where you have to have a garment or household item specially cleaned this is exactly what is needed. I want to know that when I cannot clean an item myself, the cleaner I take it to will handle my item with the same care and attention to detail that I would devote to it myself. But more than this, I want to know that my cleaner cares about the world in which we live and the type of world we will be leaving to our children.
By taking advantage of a cleaner who respects the environment in the same way that my family & I do, I can be assured that our negative environmental impacts can continue to be minimised.
