I never make News Years resolutions. For me, if you are going to make a lifestyle change you should do it when you are ready and not on a particular date – that way you are more likely to be successful. Bad habits take time to get into and they take time to get out of so I don’t expect overnight miracles either.
That is why I find myself here today. As the sun has started to shine upon British Columbia I have hit a turning point and really want to start getting fitter and healthier. It is not a matter of being fat or thin, being able to run a marathon in a ‘good’ time or take part in a triathlon. It’s about being able to run after the kids at the park, going hiking into the back-country the way we used to and not feeling too self conscious to take the kiddos swimming.
The gaming systems we have, all have the fitness games I bought for them gathering dust. My intentions are generally good but it always seems like such a drag to fire them up and with everything else happening in the house, I am easily distracted. That makes it simple to give up and I don’t need any help finding excuses.
But I do need some structure and someone to oversee & push me gently when I’m wavering. I have looking at local fitness classes and even tried some out but I felt quite intimidated by all of the fit people there! This has put me off and the same thing goes for the gym – I’d have to get past my self consciousness to make the trip. Having said that I am considering our local GoodLife Fitness. They have cycling, dance and aqua classes that seem to be suitable for a newbie like me. I might even go as far as signing up for a personal trainer.
I don’t expect miracles, I would just like to stop thinking about the weight I want to loose and the level of fitness I would like to attain and get on and do it. After 5 children and with a non-stop schedule it will be difficult to make the time, but it’s time I did. I will never look like this :
but that’s Ok I am good with that. I would be very happy to be comfortable doing this again for hours on end, without having to stop for a rest or spend the next day recovering.
So with those thoughts in mind I am ready to take the first steps, for the kids, for my husband but most of all for me. I will take the time and make the effort because I owe it to myself to be the best version of me I can be – wish me luck!
